Portraiture Attire

J Williams Portraits is dedicated to the craft of exquisite portraiture.  Our custom backdrop is composed of greens and blues to contrast with warm skin tones, and our furniture used in posing was selected for its elegance allowing us to create a classic look.

The final element to creating a masterpiece portrait is proper clothing.

Formal dress is critical to the successful creation of a portrait.  Our portrait materials are designed to last for over 200 years, and we want your clothing selection to have a timeless elegant quality to it.

Note: Just like the old master painters, our subjects are depicted in full length poses which include the feet, therefore shoe selection is as important as your clothing selection.

Clothing that represents your culture or heritage is encouraged.  We find that makes for beautiful portraits and has significant meaning for future generations.

Men - Dark Jackets (suit coat or tuxedo), white shirt, tie, and dark pants and proper dress shoes.

Ladies - Dark (black, navy, burgundy, dark green, etc.) dress or gown. White lace around collar is okay. Little or no pattern works best.  Classic Jewelry such as diamonds, pearls, etc. add a classic look.   Remember your shoes will be visible as well.

Young Girls – Darker shade or solid dresses are preferred.  Children under four can wear ivory, cream or off white.  Short or no sleeves work well to show arms for posing.   Remember shoes will be visible as well.

Young Boys – Similar to men’s guidelines or a solid dark sweater.  For children under four, a white shirt with bow tie can be work well.  Remember shoes will be visible as well.

Please Note:

Casual clothing significantly affects the rich quality and timeless look of our portraits.  It is the cornerstone for us creating a work of art that we are known for.  If you do decide to wear casual clothing, please keep to solid colors and colors that blend with everyone in the portrait.

Feel free to contact us if you have any clothing questions.
